Your 18-inch gal will be the best dressed guest at the party in her holiday sweater … after all, she’s just too cute to wear a truly “ugly” sweater, right?

Featuring a back zipper closure and your choice of three holiday applique designs, this PDF sweater pattern sews up in a snap for the confident beginner. Instructions are included for both felt and woven applique techniques, as well as optional cuffs and waistband. Customize it even further through your own unique choice of embellishments, which could include beads, trim, buttons, pompoms and much more.

This pattern also works well for recycling sweaters or sweatshirts from your closet. No more excuses for that ugly sweater!

• 1/4 yard fleece, velour or other knit sweater fabric (consider recycling old sweaters or sweatshirts)
• Felt for appliques:
Snowman – white, orange plus your choice for mittens, hat and scarf
Santa – red, white, light pink
Gingerbread Man – brown, pink
• Optional – you may choose to use scrap fabric for the appliques instead of felt, in which case you may wish to use a sewable iron-on adhesive, such as Heat ‘n Bond Lite
• 4″ vinyl zipper
• Thread to match main fabric as well as each applique fabric
• Embellishments, such as buttons, seed beads, ribbon, pompoms, paste-on eyes, etc.

  1. Fuzzy photo -- already donated the sweater, so I can't retake! Such a sweet pattern!

  2. Shannon is wearing a grey fleece sweater with a traditional advent wreath design. The applique is sewn on flannel, which sticks to the fleece sweater without sewing it on. That way, the applique is removable for year-round wear. Great, easy pattern.

  3. I think my Gingerbread Girl May (Pottery Barn Kids' Gotz doll) is "too cute to be ugly" in her sweater. Had too much fun making this and think it was Kristin's first photo contest and May & I won -- YAY!!!
